Carpet Maintenance Tips
If you have carpet flooring installed in areas that receive a substantial amount of natural light, the carpet will begin to fade. Sunlight can cause the color of carpet flooring to fade slowly over time. While exposure to natural light is not the only cause of carpet fading, it is the most significant cause. Fortunately, as long as you follow these carpet cleaning tips, you may be able to prevent additional fading and reverse some of the fading that has already occurred.
Preventing Carpet Fading
In order to prevent carpet fading, you should reduce the sunlight exposure your carpet receives as much as possible. This may mean that you will need to keep the blinds in your closed during the day and open the blinds in the evening. Another option is that you could purchase window treatments to block ultraviolet light. These window treatments will prevent the fading of your carpets without forcing you to keep the blinds closed all day. You can also get a fluorocarbon protector, which will protect your carpet temporarily from fading. If you choose to use fluorocarbon protectors, you will need to reapply them periodically.
Also, if you have area rugs in your home, you should move the rugs away from the windows and place them in the center of the rooms of your home.
Also, try not to wear shoes in your home if you have carpet flooring. Not wearing shoes in your home will reduce the likelihood of mud or dirt being tracked across the carpet. However, if you go barefoot, keep in mind that certain medications like acne treatment and athlete's foot cream can fade or discolor a carpet. Even household cleaners and carpet cleaners can strip much of the color from carpet flooring. If you notice that your carpet flooring is discolored or stained, it's best to contact a professional carpet cleaner.
Unfortunately, no matter how careful you are, your carpet may end up stained or soiled at some point. The good news is you can use a salt water solution to clean your carpet and reverse sun fading at the same time. Before you clean your carpet with the salt solution, you should vacuum it to remove loose dirt.
Then create a solution with equal parts of hot water and salt in a bowl. Be sure to stir well so that the salt dissolves completely. Use a cloth to apply the solution to your carpet. After the carpet dries, use your vacuum to remove the salt.
